So if you just purchased a Whole house system from us, you of course want to keep using it for many years to provide safe drinking water for you and your family. In order for the system to work properly, some maintenance is needed. What do we mean when we say “maintenance”?
First, lets do a brief review of the essential parts in our Whole Home Systems. The most important part, the part that disinfect your water is of course the UV-lamp. The UV-lamp itself is surrounded by a Quartz sleeve. If you have a Whole Home System or a Multi Point System from us you have a unit that is complete with pre-filtration which includes a Sediment filter and a Carbon filter. All these parts in bold are parts of the regular maintenance of our systems. Now let’s see how they are maintained and replaced.
UV-lamp
This is the most important part of the system, and if it does not work properly, your water is not disinfected at all. The control unit of the system will monitor the lamp and let you know if anything is wrong.
Due to the nature of UV lamps, over time, the production of germicidal UV-C drops off and it becomes less effective at deactivating organisms in the water. Changing the UV lamp yearly prevents this issue. If you have a Whole Home System the control unit will clearly indicate how many days are left until the lamp needs to be replaced.
The Quartz Sleeve
The quartz sleeve protects the lamp from touching the water directly and transmits the UV light into the water. Over time, this sleeve can become fouled or cloudy from mineral deposits in the water. In many places in Thailand the water is considered “hard” which can lead to limescale building up on the quartz sleeve. The quartz sleeved needs to be cleaned every time you are replacing the UV lamp.
Sediment and Carbon filter
A Whole Home System or Multi Point System comes complete with what we call “Pre-Treatment”, meaning that water passes a Sediment and a Carbon filter before reaching the UV chamber. This takes care of dirt, sediment, taste and smell, and is to make sure that the water is clear enough for the UV-treatment to work effectively.
As you understand, these filters will eventually be clogged up and need replacing as with any other water filtration systems. How often you need to replace them depends on your water quality and how much you use the system. The more dirty water that passes through the filters, the more dirt and sediment will be caught in them. If you notice a slight drop in water pressure, this is often an indication that it is time to replace the pre-filters. This can mean every 6-18 months depending on your local water quality.
Conclusion
UV System maintenance is a relatively simple affair. There is a lamp, a sleeve and usually 2 pre-filters. All these parts are very easy to replace, and we are happy to provide detailed instructions if you would like to do it yourself. Many of our customers replace these themself or have their local handyman or a local plumber replace it for them. If you maintain your system properly you will be able to use the system for many years without issues. And you can be sure that every time you or someone in your family open the tap, what comes out is perfectly safe drinking water and nothing else.
